Sailing: GlobalCapital Gozo Weekend regatta

Malta Independent Tuesday, 18 March 2008, 00:00 Last update: about 15 years ago

The Royal Malta Yacht Club’s first event “away from home” will this year be the GlobalCapital Gozo weekend regatta.

This will be held on March 29, 30 and 31. Following on last year’s successful event, the organising committee has remained loyal to last year’s programme of events and will organise this year’s race on the same lines as last year’s.

“For sailors going to Gozo, this weekend regatta has never been so full of potential or fun,” said Georges Bonello DuPuis, Commodore of the Royal Malta Yacht Club, noting that the GlobalCapital Weekend Regatta is the first “away from home” event organised by the Club.

Among the boats vying for IRC honours will be Maltese Falcon, skippered by Martin Scicluna (Beneteau 40.7) and the full on racing boat, “Strait Dealer” (J-125) sailed by David Franks.

“I’ve been racing the Club’s Gozo weekend regattas since the ‘90s and there isn’t a better place where to start the sailing season off, said Godwin Zammit, the Club’s Racing Commodore, who will also be competing on board his Jeanneau Sun Fast 40, “Inspiration”

Prizes will be awarded to the top IRC yachts competing.

Racing starts on Saturday afternoon with a passage race towards Gozo. On Sunday, a long distance race will be organised which could be a round Filfla race or around the Island of Gozo and with Monday 31 March being a public holiday, another passage race back to Malta will be organised.

On the social side of things, the club’s now famous “Happy hour at Glen Eagles” will again be held on Saturday evening at 7pm whilst a dinner in Mgarr Harbour will be organised on Sunday evening.

The competing boats will berth in Mgarr Harbour for easy access to social events that blend with true Gozitan hospitality with the outstanding camaraderie that also has become a trademark of the regatta. There is no additional fee for berthing as the Malta Maritime Authority has offered berthing space in Gozo.

Behind every good regatta is a great sponsor, and the Gozo weekend regatta benefits from a two year long support of GlobalCapital.

Boats wishing to compete are to contact the Royal Malta Yacht Club by email on: [email protected] or tel: 21333109/21318417.
