Some of the players in the Sliema Wanderers squad might be facing disciplinary measures by the club after the two successive defeats in five days at the hands of Birkirkara and Marsaxlokk.

On Thursday Sliema lost 3-1 to Birkirkara and on Monday they went down 4-2 against Marsaxlokk.

Club president Robert Arrigo told The Malta Independent that he was very disappointed with the performances of some of the club’s players in these two matches. “I expect a lot more from my players, especially some of those who form part of the national team squad,” he said.

Arrigo made it clear that the club will be taking immediate action, also hinting that some players, if not all, might not be paid their salary this month.

Meanwhile, coach Stephen Azzopardi also made it clear that striker Etienne Barbara, will have to explain his attitude during the match against Marsaxlokk. The coach said during the Net TV programme ‘Replay’ on Sunday evening that Barbara had been instructed to make his warm-up when the score was 2-0 for Marsaxlokk – and indication that he would soon have been on the field of play. “After we suffered the third goal, he just came back to the bench hinting that he would not go and play as a substitute at that stage,” said Azzopardi.

The coach also admitted that there are some problems in the Sliema camp. “I inherited them when I joined the Wanderers. These take time to be resolved but I am confident we will soon get back on track,” he said.
