On 14 March, artists, art lovers and friends met at the Core Green Exhibition, Melita Gardens Balzan, to discuss art and its relevance in the political sphere. The discussion was moderated by Miriam Mintoff who spoke about women’s role in society and the fact that women have come a long way in achieving successful careers and are making their way into politics although we have not reached the ideal scenario of equal gender representation. Ms Mintoff also said that “the political message can be delivered through many forms of media and art is one form of dialogue which helps to raise awareness about various themes through creative expression”. Ms Mintoff also led the participants through the halls where the art works were exhibited and explained the theme of each hall. The artists had the opportunity to describe their works and the concept behind it which then gave rise to further discussion with the full participation from those present.

The Core Green themes discussed were grassroots democracy, social justice and equal opportunity, ecological wisdom, non-violence, gender equity, respect and diversity, personal and global responsibility, future focus and sustainability, heritage and quality of life. All these themes created a platform for a healthy debate showing the need for similar activities with a focus on basic green issues which can be promulgated through creative expression.
