St. George’s 2
Tarxien R 0
League leaders Tarxien received a severe and unexpected setback when they were beaten by St. George’s. It was the first defeat suffered by Tarxien after a series of seven positive results, with three consecutive wins in their last three outings. Although the Rainbows are still the leaders, they can be toppled from the spot by Mosta who have a game in hand.
This result gives new hopes to both Senglea and Qormi as the promotion race is now wide open. The Saints deserved their victory as they were the better team throughout.
They forged ahead on 36 minutes when Glen Barry and Christian Grech were very effective on the left flank, with the latter passing to the unmarked Anizoba who shot home from close range.
The Saints were unlucky on 49 minutes when an Anizoba scorcher beat Curmi, but the ball smashed against the crossbar. On 53 minutes St. George’s doubled the score when Ramon Schembri miskicked a Christian Grech cross and Glenn Barry pounced on this half chance to shoot low past a bewildered Curmi in the Tarxien goal.
Tarxien pushed everything forward to get back in the game, but left gaping holes at the back. Mead Mifsud missed a golden opportunity, shooting straight in Curmi’s hands.
Tarxien continued to disappoint in attack with their only good effort eight minutes from time, with Gatt saving Muscat’s long range shot.
