Football – Bank Of Valletta Division III: Fgura win to join Attard in second place

The first period was a balanced affair with Mdina creating a dangerous opportunity early on through Nicky Micallef. Mtarfa had the better opportunities through Mario Stivala who hit just wide from close-range and on another occasion a shot by Richard Attard was cleared off the goal line by Mdina’s defender Andre Vassallo.

At the other end the crossbar denied Mdina off an Adrian Farrugia rising shot but on 38 minutes Mtarfa broke the deadlock with veteran Joseph Farrugia beating Roderick Sciberras from a well-taken free-kick.

Mdina pushed forward throughout the second-halfand were close early on through Nicky Micallef and Clint Caruana.

They then hit the post through Ian Sammut from a well-taken free-kick with Mtarfa responding through Mario Stivala whose low shot was well saved by the Mdina custodian.

In the 77th minute Muscat denied Mdina off a shot by Matthew Francalanza but the same player made it one-all two minutes later with a close-range shot.

In the 84th minute Mdina obtained the winning goal through Francalanza’s second goal and four minutes into injury-time the post denied them a further goal off an attempt by Ayrton Buhagiar.

Fgura-Ghaxaq 1-0

Ghaxaq went close after three minutes through Brian Barbara whose shot was saved by Ranier Farrugia.

Fgura replied through a Clayton Garzia effort with Celeste bringing off a fine save and in the 17th minute Rodney Galea hit just wide of the far post from the edge of the penalty area.

Fgura continued to push forward and they broke the deadlock in the 23rd minute through Jason Gauci who finished off from close-range following good work between Shanto Felice and Matthew Spiteri.

On other occasions Fgura created goal scoring opportunities through Matthew Spiteri and Rodney Galea with Ghaxaq losing a clear opportunity in the 70th minute through Noel Bilocca.

Fgura also wasted a goal scoring opportunity through Matthew Spiteri and the same player was close on another occasion with a strong shot which was well saved by Celeste.

Attard-Qrendi 0-0

Qrendi played the better football during the first period and they were twice denied by the Attard goalkeeper Owen Formosa off a shot by Josef Mansueto and a free-kick by Henry Jones.

On another occasion Qrendi were again very close through Joseph Farrugia but after the break it was Attard who created the better opportunities with Yan Grech and Daniel Agius both going close in the early stages.

On other occasions the Qrendi goalkeeper Roderick Mascena brought off fine saves off shots by Fabian Cutajar and Yan Grech but it was Qrendi who were closest to opening the score as a dangerous shot by Joe Mercieca was saved with difficulty by Owen Formosa.

Section ‘B’

Gharghur-St Lucia 1-0

Gharghur dictated the run of play during the first-half as they went close early on through Edmond Lapira and Robert Southward.

The Saints replied through an Ian Cutajar free-kick which was cleared with difficulty by the Gharghur defence and a shot by Roderick Mangion which went over.

Gharghur increased the pressure during the second-half and they broke the deadlock in the 54th minute with Robert Southward crossing from the left flank and substitute Jesmond Micallef beat Carabott with an angled shot.

In the 65th minute Gharghur were close to increasing their lead but a shot by Christian Glass bounced off the crossbar and on another occasion Jesmond Micallef hit just wide from a David Galea free-kick.

St Lucia were denied by Piscopo off a shot by Charles Agius with Gharghur going close through Marvic Grech whose low shot was saved by Carabott before Robert Southward could conclude at goal.
