YOUTH FOOTBALL: Easy Win for Section leaders

Malta Independent Friday, 28 March 2008, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

Section leaders Attard had a very easy task to dispose off the feeble challenge offered by Siggiewi. They dictated matters for long stretches and their keeper Karl Bugeja had a very easy Saturday afternoon. Following this result they now top the standings on 46 points from 16 games standing a good chance for promotion to Section B next season while Siggiewi lie third from bottom having only 10 points from same number of games.

All the action in the first period was created by Attard.

Their first goal was scored in the 21st minute. Cutajar served Kurt Zahra with a through ball in the area who in turn square-passed the ball to Jairo Caruana who netted from close range beating Siggiewi keeper Andrea Zahra with a hard grounder.

Attard resumed with their pressure up to the half-time whistle and created further chances.

The score became 2-0 soon after the restart. Zahra was fouled near the right flank corner flag and from the freekick by the same player Andrew Agius, up with his forwards, netted with a header.

The third goal was scored in the 54th minute after a well-engineered move. Cutajar scored a beauty with a rising shot from just outside the area after a back-heel pass by Tabone

Eight minutes from the end the woodwork denied Attard as the ball thumped the bar with Zahra beaten from a shot by Kurt Zahra.

Between the 75 and 79th minutes Attard added two further goals to their tally. Mamo scored from inside the area after he was served with a cross from the left flank by Zahra, who scored the fifth goal direct from a free kick.

St George’s 1

Marsa 5

St George’s were by far the better outfit during the first period and were very unlucky not to have forged ahead as they were denied by the woodwork and had a ball cleared on the line. Following this game Marsa are in fourth place together with Senglea on 29 points from 17 games while St George’s are fifth from bottom 19 points from 15 games.

The Saints mounted attack after another. Jurgen Cassar entered Marsa’s area after dribbling past three opponents and Marsa keeper Leighton Mifsud turned his shot to a corner.

In the 22nd minute St George’s were very unlucky not to open the score when the ball was cleared on the fatal line following a header by Bouvett.

Marsa opened the score in the 30th minute against the run of play. Scott Grech served Nico Abela in the area who scored with a low shot past Schieda.

The last action before the break came from St George’s. A Barbara freekick hit the post and finished in Mifsud’s waiting hands.

Marsa scored three goals between the 44th and 48th minutes and these proved to be their death knell. A one-two between Nico Abel and Kurt Zammit finished with the latter scoring a picture goal with a rising shot from 25 metres. Then Mark Mercieca served Sean Spiteri with a through ball who returned the compliment to Abela in the area who obtained a personal hat-trick with a lobbed ball and his side’s fourth goal.

The score became 5-0 in the 55th minute when Mercieca served Zammit with a square pass and scored with a hard drive from outside the area.

St George’s pulled one back in the 65th minute after a run down the left flank by Cassar who outsped two defenders and scored from a very acute angle
