The 143 councillors elected in this year’s local council elections were sworn in during two ceremonies at the President’s Palace in Valletta yesterday.
By law, the councillors that obtained the highest number of votes and whose party has the majority of seats in their respective locality will be sworn in as mayors at a later date.
Some of the newly elected mayors were contacted for comment yesterday.
Paul Borg Olivier – Valletta (PN)
“It is an honour for me to represent the people of Valletta for the fourth time. I plan to work in line with the central government’s vision to continue regenerating the capital, with the aim of making it the best candidate for the European Cultural Capital in 2018.”
Joseph Casha – Senglea (MLP)
“One of my main plans, now that I’ve been elected mayor for the fourth time, is to start training someone younger than I am, to replace me in three years time. The new door-to-door collection of separated waste is probably set to increase the local councils’ capital expense.”
Brian Bonnici – Zebbug (Malta) (MLP)
“I am very happy to have been confirmed after I was first elected the second time. The council is on a better footing financially.”
Ian Borg – Dingli (MLP)
“I was first elected mayor when I was 19, three years ago. This time round I got 55 per cent of all first preference votes. One of my main aims is to set up a tourist information centre at Dingli Cliffs.”
Elizabeth Vella – St Venera (PN)
“I’ve been a councillor for the past 14 years, but this is the first time I was appointed mayor. One of my main plans is to further enhance Gnien Romeo Romano’s position as a tourist attraction.”
Mario Salerno – Kirkop (MLP)
“I’ve been working in the council for the past 12 years. I would like to have a respite home for the elderly and to make Kirkop an ecological village.”
Anthony Dalli – Iklin (PN)
“Our main focus in Iklin is the family. We carry out a number of activities for the whole family and I’m looking forward to organise EU exchanges particularly related to IT.”
Francis Debono – Marsa (MLP)
“The environment is one of this council’s priorities. I also hope to be able to improve the localities infrastructure. We never had any capital projects undertaken by the environment. I believe the fact that local councils now fall under the remit of the prime minister should make a difference.”
Graziella Galea – St Paul’s Bay (PN)
“I am the youngest and only female mayor that St. Paul’s Bay has ever had, and one of the youngest mayors. I will do my utmost to ensure that St Paul’s Bay gets its fair share of government investment.”
Antoinette Vassallo – Ta’ Xbiex (MLP)
“It is a great satisfaction to be elected mayor. As a community, we face several challenges, including the resident’s parking scheme, waste separation, and infrastructural challenges.”
Monica Vella – Xewkija (MLP)
“This is my third spell as mayor, so I intend to build upon the council’s good work. We will work on new projects and pay particular attention to the infrastructure since the government tends to neglect road work in Xewkija.”
Robert Cutajar – Mellieha (PN)
“I was elected mayor for the first time with a considerable number of votes. I will be mayor of the Mellieha community as a whole.”
Peter Bonello – St Julian’s (PN)
“I have always worked with sincerity towards the residents of the locality and I will continue to work with an open-door policy towards the St Julian’s community.”
