Bottom placed Mellieha registered an important win against St. George's to move off the bottom of the table. After three consecutive defeats, Pelinku's boys got the better of the in-form St. George's side in a highly interesting match.

The Saints made their intentions clear from the start pushing their opponents in their own half. However Mellieha, with Sandro Costa Brasilino and Gianluca Calabretta in the limelight, were always dangerous in their fast breaks.

On ten minutes St. George's went very close when Glenn Barry passed to the onrushing Mead Mifsud whose first timer was brilliantly saved by the Mellieha custodian. Two minutes Costa Brasilino's shot went slightly wide, and on 16 minutes the Mellieha goalkeeper was again called in action saving a Vince Camileri freekick.

On 23 minutes St George's were unlucky when a Clayton Caruana first timer hit the post. On 29 minutes Mellieha missed a good chance through Reuben Vella who was denied by a good Gatt save.

But seven minutes later Mellieha were in the lead. Calabretta received from Tarek, beat a couple of defenders before beating Gatt, with the ball hitting the post before bouncing at the back of the net.

The Saints tried to hit back immediately but Barry's effort went inches wide. Four minutes from the break Mellieha were on velvet when a Reuben Vella first timer finished at the back of the net giving goalkeeper Gatt no chance at all.

As expected, St. George's stormed forward in the second half and could have opened the game wide in the opening minutes. Anizoba's lob beat the Mellieha custodian but Martin Camilleri cleared off the fatal line to save a certain goal.

Mellieha were menacing with their fast breaks with Calabretta and Reuben Vella missing two good scoring chances. The Saints’ relentless pressure reaped its fruit six minutes from time when Anizoba scored from close range.

This was a little too late for St George's who increased the pressure in the dying minutes, but were unable to save the match as Mellieha snatched three golden points.
