As a longtime supporter of the Labour party, I feel it is my duty to jot down my opinion on the leadership race. To my mind, this decision is the most important decision the MLP delegates will have to take since it will bind the party irrevocably for many years to come, and the party’s future will depend on it. I feel that in their deliberation the delegates must show maturity and decide impassionately and beyond party allegiances.
Many names have been out forward for the top post and most have the necessary attributes and qualities. I feel, however that, one of the candidates stands out and perhaps is the most deserving. Michael Falzon – to me – would be the ideal choice, even though at times he appears to be something of a rough diamond. Though undoubtedly he appeals more to the party grass roots, he does not carry any undue baggage and enjoys considerable sympathy across the board, and among the floaters.
He has also proved to be a capable and a determined politician, who managed to show his autonomy and determination, when perhaps others simply played ball. It would also seem important for Dr Falzon to be counterbalanced by two moderates in the leadership; people who would contribute further in attracting the middle ground and disgruntled nationalists.
Gavin Gulia seems to be an excellent choice as deputy leader for party affairs since he portrays such an image. Two other names which have been mentioned for the other posts for deputy leader are Chris Cardona and Jose’ Herrera. These two parliamentarians also portray the right image since they go down very well with the so-called floaters. These project an image of a party that wants to be inclusive. Furthermore, I have followed the latter two’s performances in parliament and especially when it came to Dr Herrera, he was undoubtedly excellent.
