Football – Bank Of Valletta second division: Balzan, Rabat draw in top of table clash

The Amateurs dictated the run of play early on and after four minutes a shot by Mark Hyzler was saved by Azzopardi.

Then the Zurrieq goalkeeper brought off difficult saves to deny Melita off attempts by Matthew Borg II and David Azzopardi but Zurrieq managed to open the score in the 23rd when a Matthew Genuis shot was deflected by a Melita defender and Chris Farrugia was on hand to beat Sapiano from close-range.

At the other end Melita were close through Bjorn Bondin and on another occasion Zurrieq’s substitute cleared the ball off the goal line. In the 42nd minute Zurrieq made it 2-0 through Godfrey Chetcuti but just two minutes later Melita reduced the arrears through a penalty given for a foul by Azzopardi on Julian Galea and converted by Matthew Borg II.

As the match restarted for the second period, Melita protested for a penalty and in the 53rd minute Zurrieq’s defender Karl Sacco headed the ball off the ball to deny David Azzopardi.

On the hour Zurrieq were unlucky through Matthew Genuis’ free-kick which was saved by Sapiano with the assistance of the post as Melita replied through George Gribbon whose shot was deflected to a corner-kick.

In the 66th minute Melita made it two-all as a well-taken corner-kick by David Azzopardi was headed in by Matthew Borg II. Melita now increased the pressure but it was Zurrieq who could have scored through Michael Abdilla who shot wide with an open goal.

In the closing stages Melita were again very close through David Azzopardi and Julian Galea.

Balzan Y-Rabat A 0-0

In the opening four minutes Balzan were close through Kurt Coleiro and Antoine Sacco. Rabat replied through Kayne Said whose close-range effort was blocked by Bonello.

At the other end Balzan wasted an easy opportunity through Antoine Sacco following a good move by Gilbert Scerri but in the 18th minute Rabat could have broken the deadlock as Clint Micallef advanced all alone but his weak shot was saved by Bonello.

Rabat were now dictating the run of play and they were denied by Bonello’s superb save off an excellent free-kick taken by Jonathan Bezzina. Rabat kept pushing forward with Emanuel Muscat hitting just wide following a personal effort.

Then a free-kick by Clint Micallef finished just wide of the far post and just before the break an attempt by Emanuel Muscat just missed the target. In the opening seconds of the second-half Balzan were denied by Rabat’s defender Josef Tonna who cleared the ball off the line off a shot by Kurt Coleiro.

In the 56th minute Balzan won a corner-kick which was taken by Gilbert Scerri and Sergio Cappitta headed just over the bar and two minutes later the Rabat custodian saved off a Gilbert Scerri free-kick.

In the 74th minute Rabat responded through a cross by Adam Smeir with Azzopardi punching the ball away with Chris Schembri shooting high over the bar from the edge of the penalty area.

Naxxar L-San Gwann 1-3

The Saints were the better team during the first period but it was Naxxar who had the first goal scoring opportunity with Mark Deguara’s free-kick being saved by Justin Spiteri.

At the other end the Saints had a shot by Rennie Forace which was partially saved by Kevin Agius and Sergio Hili miskicked infront of goal.

In the 13th minute Rennie Forace shot at goal from close-range with Agius brining off a difficult save and on other occasions attempts by Sergio Hili and Rio Micallef just missed the target.

Nine minutes after the restart the Naxxar keeper brought off a difficult save to deny Roberto Brincat. Naxxar replied through dangerous attempts by Jean Pierre Zahra and Chris Farrugia but it was the Saints who broke the deadlock on 65 minutes through Roberto Brincat who headed in from a well-taken free-kick by Sergio Hili.

Two minutes later Naxxar won a corner-kick which was taken by Jean Pierre Zahra with the Saints’ keeper Spiteri losing the ball and Aaron Galea was on hand to shoot in from close-range.

In the 75th minute Sergio Hili wasted a glaring goal scoring opportunity for the Saints and then Naxxar also wasted an easy opportunity through Adrian Fenech.

San Gwann were then close on two occasions through Roberto Brincat but four minutes from time they took the lead as Alan Borg headed on towards Sergio Hili who managed to beat Agius from close-range.

Just before the final whistle the Saints sealed the issue with a third goal scored by Adrian Gatt for a final 3-1 scoreline.

Mgarr-Sirens 3-0

The first period was a balance affair with Mgarr breaking the deadlock in the 9th minute as a perfect pass by Brian Deguara was picked up by Matthew Muscat whose low shot finsished at the back of the net.

In the 23rd minute Mgarr could have increased their lead but Schembri did well to save a shot by Matthew Borg. Sirens’ reaction produced an attempt by Kenneth Zammit which was saved by Ellul and a lob by Glenn Gatt which was cleared with difficulty by the Mgarr defence.

In the 41st minute Mgarr wasted an easy opportunity through Matthew Muscat and on the stroke of half-time the post denied Sirens off a header by Adrian Galea. Sirens shared the exchanges during the second part of the match and had a goal by Adrian Galea annulled for a foul on an Mgarr player.

They were again close through Galea and Ryan Theuma with Mgarr replying through Brian Deguara whose shot was well saved by Schembri.

In the 60th minute Mgarr made it 2-0 as they were given a penalty for a foul on Matthew Borg and their captain Malcolm Bugeja scored from the spot. In a counter-attack in the 72nd minute Mgarr were again close through Brian Deguara but they managed to increase their lead in the 78th minute through Matthew Muscat.

Sirens were then close to a consolation goal through Adrian Galea and Glenn Gatt. This result means that Sirens have been relegated and will be playing Third Division football next season.
