Football – Bank Of Valletta third division: Zebbug move step closer to promotion

Section A

Zejtun-Xghajra T 1-1

Zejtun went close after just a few seconds through an Alex Farrugia free-kick which just missed the target.

At the other end Xghajra replied through Alex Farrugia whose cross was met by Jonathan Cachia whose shot was saved by Gafa. Play continued to be balanced with the Corinthians being denied by Camilleri off a free-kick well-taken by Alex Farrugia.

Four minutes before the break another Farrugia free-kick went just high over the bar and early on in the second period attempts by Jovil Abela and Lizio Grech finished just wide.

Xghajra increased the pressure with the Zejtun keeper bringing off a difficult save to foil Jonathan Cachia with Zejtun coming back through a dangerous counter-attack by Andy Portelli.

In the 77th minute Xghajra gained a penalty for a foul by Abela onn Lizio Grech and the same player duly converted from the spot to give his team a deserved lead.

Xghajra created other goal scoring opportunities through Lizio Grech and Alex Farrugia but two minutes into injury-time Zejtun managed to equalise as a cross by Alex Farrugia was finished off by Andy Portelli who managed to beat Camilleri with an angled shot.

Zebbug-Siggiewi 2-0

After just three minutes Zebbug were close through Julian Camilleri and in the sixth minute Nazzareno Abela hit just wide from the edge of the penalty area.

On another occasion Lawrence Vella was unlucky with his strong shot bouncing off the crossbar and later on an effort by George Saliba was saved with difficulty by Camilleri.

The Rangers were again close through Lawrence Vella on two occasions and a minute before the break the Siggiewi goalkeeper did well to stop a low shot by Trevor Thomas.

Seven minutes into the second-half Siggiewi wasted a goal scoring opportunity through Josef Vassallo and later on the same player was denied by Rangers’ keeper Philip Attard.

At the other end the Siggiewi custodian brought off difficult saves to foil Errol Cachia and Gordon Mallia but Zebbug took the lead in the 67th minute through Keith Farrugia who managed to beat Camilleri with a low shot.

Siggiewi’s reaction was well controlled by Zebbug who on their part increased their lead on 86 minutes through Gordon Mallia who finished off a good move by Farrugia. In added time Siggiewi went close through Mark Camilleri.

Section B

Pembroke-Kirkop 4-0

After five minutes Pembroke went close through Carlo Leonardi and later on Liam Camilleri hit just wide from close-range.

On 11 minutes Pembroke opened the score with Antoine Briffa doing all the work that led to Carlo Leonardi’s goal.

Pembroke created other opportunities and made it 2-0 in the 26th minute through Liam Camilleri who beat Cardona with a close-range shot. Just before the end of the first period Pembroke could have further increased their lead but Leonardi just hit wide from close-range.

Three minutes into the second-half Kirkop were denied by Debattista off a Bryan Falzon corner-kick and on the hour a shot by Michael Theuma was also saved by the Pembroke custodian. Pembroke added a third goal on 71 minutes through an excellent volley by Liam Camilleri and later on a point-blank shot by Steve Micallef was parried by Cardona.

Three minutes into injury-time Pembroke managed to score yet another goal scored by substitute Kevin Vella.

Kalkara-Luqa SA 1-2

Luqa dictated the run of play throughout the first-half and after going very close through Mark Said, they managed to break the deadlock in the 10th minute through Lee Baldacchino who lobbed the ball over the advancing Kalkara keeper Matthew Barbara.

Kalkara came back through Herbert Spiteri whose low drive brought the best out of John Agius. Seven minutes before the end of the first-half Luqa’s Lee Baldacchino ed his team mate Emanuel Cumbo with an inch-perfect pass but the latter shot straight into Barbara.

Nine minutes into the second period Luqa went close through Adrian Psaila whose shot was well saved by Barbara.

In the 64th minute Barbara was again on hand to deny Pirrone but in the 73rd minute an indecision by Kalkara’s defender Anton Cassar allowed Luqa’s striker Alessadro Pirrone to lob in from close-range and make it 2-0.

Late in the match Kalkara wasted an easy opportunity through Justin Camilleri but the same player reduced the arrears seven minutes from time.
