Poulton And Borg triumph

Malta Independent Wednesday, 2 April 2008, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

Forty Kingfisher members fished the long waited second doubles league match held on Manoel Island.

It was an early start: 5.30 am was the time set for registrations, after which sections and pegs (fishing positions) were drawn. The match is won on a weight system where all fish are to be kept alive in special keep nets.

Pierre Poulton and Charlo Borg were really on form with two silver bream a cast each, for the first hour, followed by wrasse, gurnards and red mullet. It was immediately evident they were the guys to beat.

The rest of the anglers fished hard and were quick trying to better their weights. Many big fish where hooked from the middle of the harbour facing Valletta, but the edge of the reef played havoc with the light tackle and many fish were lost.

Half way through the match Godfrey Farrugia and George Grech caught some nice bonus mullet, giving them the edge over the rest of the anglers. However, all was not lost for Julio Azzopardi and Forcin Calafato as in the last hour they landed some nice bream to bring them onto the podium.

The final result was the following:

1st: Pierre Poulton\Charlo Borg 4.31 kilos. 2nd: Julio Azzopadi\Forcin Calafato 2.87 kilos. 3rd: George Grech\Godfrey Farrugia 2.76 kilos.

The winning members were all presented with trophies and vouchers thankfully sponsored by Mister Fish .

The committee thanked Midi group for accepting the members’ request to fish at Manoel Island. For further details about the club and results one may visit the KSFA website www.ksfamalta.org.
