Even though Labour MP Marie Louise Coleiro-Preca still refuses to state whether she will officially put forward her name for the post of leader of the MLP, yesterday she told The Malta Independent that the “intentions are there.”
Ms Coleiro Preca yesterday issued a call for a press conference that will be held tomorrow where she will “clarify her position within the Labour Party”.
However, when contacted by this newspaper, she refused to clarify what she will say during the press conference or whether she will join the race for the post of leader.
“Everything will be made clear in the press conference – I do not wish to say anything before,” she said.
Saying that she has “intentions” for the post of leader, she could not be drawn out to say what will be said tomorrow.
In the general election, the popular Labour MP was immediately elected with a total of 5,490 votes – the second most popular MP after outgoing party leader Alfred Sant.
Following the resignation of Dr Sant, she was quoted as saying that she was approached by many supporters urging her to put forward her name for the post vacated.
If Ms Coleiro-Preca does decide to make her “intentions” official, the number of officially interested people will go up to four as she will be competing for the post of party leader along with Evarist Bartolo, Joseph Muscat and Michael Falzon.
Former MLP deputy leader George Abela is also considering his options but has still to confirm whether he will be contesting or otherwise.
