Lidl Malta Ltd, a subsidiary company of the multinational group Lidl & Schwarz that operates in the retail industry, has announced that it will be opening three supermarkets in Malta on 24 April. The Group currently operates in 22 European countries with more than 8,000 outlets.
The supermarkets are situated in Santa Venera, San Gwann and Luqa, and have a sales area of 1136, 1014 and 1048 square metres respectively. Each supermarket will provide parking facilities for approximately 100 cars.
Lidl Malta will be collaborating closely with Lidl Italia, which will also be supplying goods through its modern distribution centre in Rome, thus exploiting the synergies of the Group in the field of supply chain management and logistics.
“We believe that Malta is a very interesting market,” said David Gatt, Country Manager for Lidl Malta, “and we are sure that customers will welcome our formula, which is to offer best quality products at the best price.”
The product range will be made up of approximately 1100 items most of which are exclusively everyday products. The range includes fresh meat, fresh fruit and vegetables, chilled and frozen food as well as a variety of cleaning and personal care products. The product range will be similar to the range available in Italy, but it will also be supplemented by a number of products produced in Malta as well as products arriving from Lidl UK and other European countries.
“We want to offer a range of products that is in line with the Maltese lifestyle and food consumption traditions,” Mr Gatt continued. “However we will also be having a number of innovative offerings such as organic fruits and vegetables which customers will discover when visiting our stores.”
The company shall also be introducing a number of products that carry the “Fair Trade” label, which represents an initiative aimed at developing decent working conditions, sustainability and fair trade terms for farmers and workers in developing countries as well as the “Marine Stewardship Council (MSC)” sign, which represents an initiative aimed to enhance responsible management of seafood resources.
The management team has spent more than a year undergoing an intensive training programme in Italy and was also given the opportunity to manage a number of supermarkets in Italy. The management team has also attended various courses at the Lidl Academy in Italy whose role is to focus exclusively on staff development and training.
In the coming days, the company will be launching an advertising campaign on TV and printed media to give the public more information about the opening.
