Compleet all but ended Siggiewi’s aspirations of a place in the play off final, taking a three point lead over them. It was touch and go for a good part of the match, but Compleet came through at the end, and Siggiewi now have to produce something out of the ordinary against Bupa, to open up their chances again. It was a tight, fast match, with no quarter given, and the two sides had their occasions throughout the game. For the most part it was Siggiewi chasing, but at the end they couldn’t get near enough, and Compleet got theri reward.
Compleet began with Michael Naudi on the bench, and Matthew Zammit made a reappearance. For Siggiewi it was David Camilleri back from a long term injury, and he had a splendid match.
Etienne Bezzina sank a trey for Compleet at the start, but Siggiewi pushed forward, for a 9-7 lead. Omar Said then made personal points, including a trey, and soon after it was Kirsten Baldacchino sinking another trey, for a 17-11 lead. Compleet increased their advantage once more, and when Siggiewi came back, Omar Said put in a couple of hoops just before the end of the quarter, for a double figure lead.
In the second session Siggiewi went close early on, at 21-26. Compleet rallied, to hold down their advantage, with a Michael Naudi trey. Siggiewi were persistent, and closed down the gap once more. Late in the session Etienne Bezzina sank his second trey for Compleet, but David Camilleri had a similar trey for Siggiewi. At the interval Compleet could count on a 36-32 lead.
After the break Compleet’s efforts to increase their lead found a reply from their opponents, but free shots extended Compleet’s lead, even though David Camilleri sank a second trey for Siggiewi. Finally Siggiewi made the breakthrough, and three Abraham Portelli hoops in an 8-0 run, gave them a 49-46 lead. It was Omar Said who pulled Compleet forward again, with two more treys, in a session-ending 9-1 run, for a 55-50 score, as Siggiewi once more fell behind.
The final quarter saw Compleet controlling the situation, keeping Siggiewi at bay, and edging ahead with fast breaks. Siggiewi were 53-63 in arrears midway through the session, but Camilleri’s third trey gave them some hope. Compleet played possession, then Michael Naudi’s second trey ended the possibilities, and Compleet were home and dry.
