Leaders Mosta avenged their first round defeat against Marsa beating them soundly in a one-sided match. This win puts Mosta five points clear at the top of the standings with four matches remaining. At this stage Mosta are firm favourites to obtain promotion to the elite of Maltese football.

Mosta were in a class of their own yesterday against lowly Marsa, with Elton Vella giving a polished performance having a say in all of his sides’ goals.

Mosta surged forward from the very first minute with striker Kalenga missing a sitter after only two minutes when he blasted over the bar from an ideal position. Minutes later Marsa had their attempt at goal with a long distance effort from Achukwu which was blocked by the Mosta custodian.

On nine minutes Mosta took the lead when Elton Vella’s long ball found the unmarked Kalenga who beat Spiteri with a precise grounder. Mosta continued to push forward in search of the second goal and the Marsa goalkeeper blocked a Camenzuli shot from an acute angle.

On 18 minutes the Marsa goalkeeper Spiteri completely misjudged the flight of the flight of the ball but Steve Borg failed to score from an angled position. But Mosta doubled the score on 22 minutes when Elton Vella’s breath-taking freekick finished in the top corner of the net.

Mosta were now in full command of the proceedings even if they lost Daniel Theuma who limped off and was replaced by Ryan Deguara. On 29 minutes Mosta scored agaian when Elton Vella was put through by Melvin Farrugia and the talented youngster beat Spiteri on the first post.

Near the end of the first half Marsa had two attempts through Achukwu but both his efforts missed the target.

At the start of the second half Achukwu failed to control the ball in front goal and on the other end Massimo Grima’s freekick slightly missed the base of the upright. On the hour Carlos Camenzuli missed a sitter after being served by Massimo Grima.

On 65 minutes Mosta’s Antonio Saliba handled the bal inside the area and from the resultant penalty Darren Vella blasted the ball past Debono. But Marsa’s slim hopes were quickly dashed to the ground when Mosta re-established their three-goal lead two minutes later. Elton Vella was again the mastermind behind this goal penetrating deep inside the Marsa penalty before passing to Carlos Camenzuli who easily scored from close range.

Five minutes from time Marsa reduced the arrears when substitute Ian Pepe scored from close range after Jonathan Martin’s header had hit the base of the upright.
