Paola Hibs Candy won the 2007/2008 league when they beat Playvolley Blues in straight sets.
Playvolley Blues, who are sure to end this season in third place, were overcome by a superior Hibs as these lost the match 25-12, 25-6 and 25-13.
The Paolites played well and were always in the lead during each of the sets. Strong attacks by Carmen Gauci, Alison Borg Hayman and Gertrude Zarb brought down an already discouraged Playvolley side.
Hibs coach David Bonnici expressed his satisfaction after the team won their fifth consecutive league title. This season, Hibs already won the Super Cup and are in the semi finals of the Fr. Tony Parnis Cup.
Next weekend, Hibs meet second placed X-Sel in the final match of the championship pool.
In the men’s league, Marsascala Mapei are a step closer to winning the league when they beat Fleur de Lys 3-0. Mapei were set back at the start of the first set when Louis Scriha had to be substituted due to injury. Robert Mifsud came on instead of Scriha and, together with Ron Stivala and David Caruana, helped win valuable points.
Mapei were riding a high and Fleur de Lys seemed to be helpless especially against a number of spike serves by Paul Vella and attacks from Robert Balzan. Fleur de Lys only managed to trouble Mapei during the third set with Paul Tonna and Anatoly Gatt doing the damage.
Mapei, however, were determined to win the match and not to repeat the mistake they made in their last encounter when they were leading 2-0 but then lost the match 3-2.
Next weekend, these two teams meet again in what will be a decisive encounter.
