Sliema kept their high profile. disposing of Suns for the fourth time this season, and holding on to the top position in the Plate standings. Suns were hit badly from thestart, and had to suffer Sliema’s relentless pressure, in the first part of the match.
Sliema then didn’t keep their stranglehold on the match, and Suns could also have their bright moments in the game.
Francesca Farrugia returned to the Sliema side, after her injury, and Petra Zammit was missing once more from the Suns outfit.
Sliema went out with the sole intention of not giving the Suns players any room to cause damage. Suns were overwhelmed, and Leanne Sciberras, Chanel Galea and company ran up a long and hefty 21-0 run, before Suns’ Graziella Santillo could open her team’s account, late in the session.
In the second quarter Sliema were still piling up the points, but their rythym started to die down.
Ruth Farrugia put in a couple of free shots for Suns, before Sliema came up with another 8-0 run.
Late in the quarter it was Maria Agius with another hoop for Suns. At the interval Sliema were on a 37-6 advantage.
After the break it was another story. It was a quiet match at first, but then Suns pounced on Sliema’s somewhat indifferent play, and made up a plucky 9-0 run, with the usual Diane Falzon trey.
Sliema finally closed down their rearguard, and finished the quarter on a three basket spread, for a 47-17 score, after three sessions.
In the final session the game lost much of its previous intensity. Suns were again limited in obtaining points, and midway through the quarter Sliema ran up an 8-0 break. The match then trickled slowly to its end.
