Swieqi FC

Malta Independent Saturday, 12 April 2008, 00:00 Last update: about 18 years ago

Commencing only as a little village with very few houses in the 1950s, throughout the years the town of Swieqi has evolved and expanded into an area comprising at least 10,000 inhabitants.

This town also includes the principal areas of Ibrag and Madliena.

We feel that the time has come for the areas of Swieqi-Ibrag-Madliena to be represented by a proper and well-established football team.

Some would say – what’s in a name? Well a name is everything!

This team would represent the whole community and would also provide a necessary and fruitful identity to our society.

Football is the most popular sport on the island, and it is important that a town of Swieqi’s calibre, lacking a sense of belonging, would have a team reflecting its constant progress. There are other communities such as: Mgarr, Gudja and Burmarrad, (to name but a few) which only have populations of around 4,000 people. Now, keeping this in mind, with a population of 10,000 people, why shouldn’t Swieqi have a club to compete in an amateur league affiliated with MFA?

We have often met people who have expressed their enthusiasm in founding a club which would represent both themselves and their hopes and dreams. Swieqi FC will be the people’s club, built on determination, ambition and quality. Show us that you care! Join this forum!
