With reference to Mr Micallef Debono’s letter “Elections are hard going”, I would like to clarify some points in this correspondence.

Union membership is a confidential matter. For this reason, and in accordance with the Data Protection Act, the MUT never discloses its membership list to third parties. The members’ database is kept only for internal administrative purposes and members may rest assured that the Union will never divulge any information based on its records to anyone, be they presidential or council candidates, NGOs, or even bona fide researchers. This is made amply clear from the outset on the MUT’s enrolment form.

An Election Commission whose members are elected during the union’s General Conference conducts the MUT Council Elections. The Election Commission receives nominations from candidates and conducts the whole process in a professional way befitting a serious and democratic union.
