Football – Bank Of Valletta third division: Xghajra Tornadoes win to strengthen claim for place in promotion play-offs

Section ‘A’

Siggiewi-Zejtun C. 1-4

Zejtun Corinthians dictated the run of play throughout the first 45 minutes and after six minutes they hit the upright through Marco Gerada from a well-taken corner-kick.

Siggiewi were very close on two occasions through Josef Vassallo and Eman Ciappara with Zejtun wasting a clear goal scoring opportunity through Jesmar Abela.

They opened the score through a Marco Gerada penalty in the 38th minute and four minutes later Gerada’s through-pass was picked up by Andy Portelli who beat Schembri from close-range.

Just before the break Zejtun increased further their lead with Jesmar Abela heading down towards Brian Testaferrata who hit home from close-range.

The second period belonged to Siggiewi who reduced the gap in the 57th minute as a pass by Josef Micallef was picked up by Eman Ciappara who beat Gafa from close-range.

Siggiewi continued to push forward and went very close through Ciappara and John Mascena.

At the other end Zejtun had a Sergio Schembri effort which was cleared off the line by Mark Aquilina with Siggiewi then twice hitting the woodwork through Eman Ciappara.

However it was Zejtun who managed to score through Jean Paul Abela in the 85th minute for a final

4-1 scoreline.

Ghaxaq-Mdina K 1-2

Mdina Knights were the better team throughout the first period with Matthew Francalanza twice going very close to opening the score early on in the match.

Francalanza had better luck in the 13th minute as he managed to open the score with a close-range shot with Ghaxaq coming back on the half hour with Christian Cristiano finding Noel Bilocca with a perfect pass and the latter’s shot was well saved by Sciberras.

Just before the break Mdina were denied by Celeste off an attempt by Francalanza and the same keeper was again on hand in the 55th minute as he saved an attempt by Andrew Scerri.

Ghaxaq gradually shared the exchanges and created a couple of opportunities but it was again Matthew Francalanza who managed to beat Celeste in the 63rd minute to make it 2-0 for the Knights.

On 72 minutes the post denied Ghaxaq off an attempt by Brian Barbara and later on Christian Cristiano hit just high over the bar.

In the 89th minute Ghaxaq scored a consolation goal through a strong shot by Ludvic Camilleri.

Mtarfa-Xghajra T 0-4

The main protagonist in Xghajra’s convincing victory was Jesmond Azzopardi who scored a hat-trick which helped Xghajra win three important points in their quest for a place in the promotion playoffs.

After only a few minutes, Xghajra went close to opening the score, but Lizio Grech’s shot went wide.

Lizio Grech was again dangerous for Xghajra in the 15th minute through a free-kick which went wide.

Three minutes later it was Jesmond Azzopardi who missed a good opportunity for Xghajra when his shot from close range went wide.

Xghajra kept on persisting and in the 35th minute it was Lizio Grech who was again denied when he failed to net in an easy opportunity.

However, in the 39th minute, Xghajra finally took the lead through Lizio Grech who dribbled Mtarfa’s keeper Muscat and netted in. In the 42nd minute, Xghajra found a second goal through a Jesmond Azzopardi shot.

In the second half, the tune did not change and Xghajra scored their third goal when Jesmond Azzopardi netted in from a diagonal position.

Jesmond Azzopardi was again protagonist in the 70th minute when he scored Xghajra’s fourth goal from a handy position.

Mtarfa went close to a consolation goal in the 39th minute, but Stefano Briffa’s shot was neutralised by Roderick Camilleri.

Section ‘B’

Gharghur-Kalkara 3-0

Kalkara were close early on through Nicholas Gatt but a minute later they took the lead as a good move by Marvic Grech was finished off by Robert Southward.

On 18 minutes Gharghur increased their lead through Marvic Grech from a well-taken free-kick and later on an Edmond Lapira shot was well saved by Barbara.

In the 39th minute Kalkara went close through Clive Wait and just before the break Mark Scerri crossed from the left flank but Joe Mizzi hit wide infront of goal.

The second period was a balanced affair with Gharghur going close through Marvic Grech and Robert Southward with Kalkara responding through Anton Cassar and Joe Mizzi who hit just wide from close-range.

Eight minutes from time Gharghur sealed the issue through a third goal headed in by sbstitute Antonello Brincat from a cross by Jeffrey Bonello.
