Maltese Drag Racing team Maksar Racing took part in their first of three 2008 events at the Santa Pod raceway, North of London.
The so called Easter Thunderball features some of the meanest, fastest machinery on this planet, including jet cars, Top Fuel and Top Methanol dragsters, funny cars, drag bikes and the unique Maltese 4 ton drag truck, that has reached a new record top speed of 133mph.
With the truck arriving just two days before the event, the team of six Maltese people, all with different responsibilities, headed to their fully equipped trailer for the event.
Unfortunately very bad weather hampered most of the event, leaving six people from sunny Malta, stuck indoors, and praying for at least one run in four days.
The clouds looked undecided on the last day on Monday so the event crew had no choice but to gamble, hoping to give something back to the numerous crowds that had camped for the whole weekend.
Apart from a few moments of snow, the weather permitted the team to one single run which made the hectic weekend worth the flight.
After impressing the crowd with a ground shaking burnout, the truck sped through the green light with amazing force, enjoying the nice breeze of fresh air and, to everyone’s amazement, clocking a new world record of 10.6 seconds.
Two surprises for the crowd, not expecting such tremendous speed from a 4-ton truck, as well as not knowing what Maltese talent could really produce.
Some had heard in disbelief that the monster could reach such speed. It only took Maksar Racing Team one smooth run to confirm.
The team’s next international showing will be at the FIA main event, again in Santa Pod, from 24 to 26 May.
