Kick Into action and have fun at Skolasport

Malta Independent Thursday, 17 April 2008, 00:00 Last update: about 19 years ago

One of the key sport disciplines offered by Kunsill Malti ghall-iSport in the Skolasport Programme is football, organised both at the Marsa Sports Complex and St. Benedict’s College.

Football at Skolasport is all about having fun. This was emphasised by the ex-National Team Football Player David Carabott. Together with coach and goalkeeper Saviour Darmanin, they explained that initially kicking a ball and playing football has to be enjoyed by the young participants.

It is only after learning the skills that one looks at tournaments and the winning aspect. Skolasport sponsored by Kelloggs offers this opportunity to youngsters between the age of 11 and 16 years.

During these sessions the young aspiring footballers are divided into small groups and taught the basic skills of ball control, passing, juggling, shooting and crossing after the customarily warm-up and stretching exercises. Each session is rounded off with a supervised game where players are left to apply and experiment the various techniques learnt.

Talented players are encouraged to join youth nurseries to reinforce their training and practice without missing out on the fun part.

Skolasport has always offered this opportunity together with good facilities and equipment, qualified instructors and coaching. Thus, over the past years, Skolasport registered a constant and gradual increase of football enthusiasts.
