Bowling – Mediterranean Championship: Sue Abela clinches gold in Crete

She beat 17 other competitors to further justify her well deserved title of ‘Queen of the Mediterranean’ in bowling circles.

A contingent of four tenpin bowlers, namely Sue Abela, Tiziana Carannante, Paul Baldacchino and Dennis Mercieca, are competing in the Championships. Competitive play started on Thursday morning with the Ladies Singles event, played over six games.

Abela began with games of 199, 185 and 196, and then improved in the second half of the session to scoop a matching pair of 235’s, and a 226 for an excellent 1276 total (212 ave), just nine pins ahead of main rival Natassa Rovithaki from Greece.

Promising youngster Tiziana Carannante placed 16th in this her first experience of these championships, in which nine Mediterranean nations are competing; Cyprus, France, Gibraltar, Greece, Italy, San Marino, Spain, Turkey and Malta.
