Malta’s Shaun Parnis finished a creditable third in the Men’s World Cup in Warilla, Australia, yesterday.
After beating his Canadian opponent in the quarter-finals, Parnis faced an opponent from Malaysia, Safuan Said, in the semi-finals, but was beaten 9-5, 11-6.
Parnis had the consolation of knowing that Said went on to win the final against Ali Forsyth of New Zealand 9-5 11-1. New Zealand’s Forsyth had defeated Australia’s Kelvin Kerkow in the other semi-final 1-12, 9-4, 3-0, to reach the final.
Kerkow also finished joint third with Parnis in the final standings.
Earlier Parnis had managed to win Section B in the qualifying round quite comfortably after winning all his nine matches. He reached the semi-finals after beating Canada’s Hirendra Bhartu 8-10, 11-2, 4-0.
