Friday saw more medals for Malta in the XI Mediterranean Championahips in Chania, Crete (Greece) where, after Sue Abela's stunning gold medal performance in the Ladies' Singles event, she scooped a bronze medal in the Ladies' Doubles along with partner Tiziana Carannante.

After a shaky start in the Singles event, youngster and M.C. first timer Carannante came through for her vastly more experienced team mate in the Doubles, registering an excellent 1143 total over six games (190.5 ave), including highs of 202 and a great 224 to finish. Even her lowest of the session was a very respectable 171 game.

Abela rolled a 1189 individual total, including games of 231 and 226, bringing the team tally up to 2,332 and placing them in third place for a pair of bronze medals. The event was won by France (2,396) represented by Elise Bretteville and Marie Gauton, while Italian duo Rafaella Fusco and Daniela Pialino were second.

The Maltese team did not fare so well in the very tough Men's Doubles, the pairing of Paul Baldacchino and Dennis Mercieca placing seventh from nine teams. The Italian team took first place and silver went to Cyprus.

Friday evening and yesterday morning also saw the 4-bowler team event being held, in which Team Malta managed fifth place with a good six game total of 4,633. The event went to Turkey (4,808), with France in second place (4,771), followed by Cyprus in third place (4,728).

After the Singles, Doubles and Team events, the cumulative individual scores decide the 'All Events' standings for the finals, which will competed by the top eight men and women. Sue Abela's overall performance swept her to first place among the ladies, while Tiziana Carannante just missed out on qualification, finishing in tenth place. Dennis Mercieca also finished tenth in the Men's division, while Paul Baldacchino placed 17th.
