The resolution passed by the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly to guarantee the right of access to a safe and legal abortion is evidence that European lawmakers are giving up on educating society. Not only is Resolution 1607 (2008) undermining our Christian values and providing leeway for the human being to play god but also it is reducing the value of life itself. Nobody has the right to mess around with human life; moreover, no human being has the right to decide who lives and who should die.

The Maltese delegation, which is made up of Members of Parliament from both sides of the house, worked hard to lobby against the resolution. However, the work by the Maltese parliamentary delegation failed to stop the resolution from being approved in the Council of Europe in Strasbourg.

From the 47 member states of the Council of Europe, only Malta, Andorra, Poland and Ireland still completely ban abortion. A number of other member states have restrictive rules but still allow some form of abortion. The only MPs who spoke against the resolution were the Maltese, the Italian, the Irish and the Polish representatives.

Such a resolution shows that there are politicians that prefer to take the easy way out rather than to continue investing and carrying out the fight through education for the younger generations and members of society.

It is contradictory the way certain politicians run their politics. On one hand they defend and promote animal rights while at the same time diminish the rights of the unborn child. Everybody has the sacred right to live. The debate should turn on how this future generations be protected, especially in a situation in which demographic studies show an ageing Europe.

Abortion is only another legal term for those that want to commit murder. No one has the right to decide who dies. After all, whoever kills another person commits a crime. Criminal acts should be penalized, not justified.

A killing, being that of a 60-year-old or of an unborn child, is always a killing..

Pro-abortionists say that the unborn child is “just a blob of tissue”. Modern technology, especially ultrasound, has proved that babies in wombs are alive. One now famous photo shows an unborn baby 21 weeks old reaching out of the womb and grabbing the finger of the surgeon. Is it not a human gesture? There is now no question that it is a living, growing and feeling human being long before birth.

I came across an interesting quote by former US president Ronald Reagan: “I’ve noticed that everybody that is for abortion has already been born”; words that portray the egoistic approach taken by pro-abortionists.

It is quite ironic that the one hand we campaign against the death sentence while on the other there are people that advocate the killing of innocent unborn babies. Have we forgotten that Article 3 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights states: “Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of person.”

Right to life is a phrase that describes the belief that a human being has an essential right to live, particularly that a human being has the right not to be killed by another human being. Therefore, if a foetus or embryo is growing it is living, and if the outcome of this molecular fusion is a human being that would deduce that he or she is a living human being.

Another issue that comes to mind regards equality between the sexes. Since 1979, the Council of Europe has been promoting European cooperation to achieve real equality between the sexes. I cannot understand how the father’s opinion in the approved resolution is totally left out. Since the saying goes “it takes two to tango”, then such an important resolution should take into consideration the involvement of the father and his rights.

I am proud that in this case where the issue involves the life of human beings, both the government and the opposition forgot about their differences and reacted wisely. We have the duty to promote life on all occasion. We must continue lobbying pro life and defend the human rights.
