From Mr. E. Privitera
May I remind all those, who today write with such fervour about the contest for the MLP leadership, and who are strongly suggesting who Labour’s new leader should be, what they used to write in past years? “Change Dr Sant and Labour will win the election hands down!”
Dr Sant is no longer leader of the Labour Party. From the very first day of Dr Sant’s resignation, the first salvos were fired at whoever expressed his/her intention to contest the party’s leadership post. Some even suggested that there was no one who could lead Labour to victory at the poll – except one, Dr George Abela!
Rest assured that if Dr Abela succeeds in being elected leader and makes his first anti-PN move, Dr Abela, instead of remaining the “darling” of those same PN writers, such as Daphne Caruana Galizia, he too would become another “Socialist Demon” just like his predecessors! Can anyone in his/her right senses ever believe that the oracle from Bidnija will ever urge voters to vote Labour just because Abela happens to be Labour’s leader?!
With reference to Dr Abela, may I comment briefly on what was written by your columnist Josanne Cassar in her article of 20 April … “And George Abela in his first official speech assures Labour supporters that he will make sure to welcome back Mintoff and all those like him to the party.”
If what Josanne Cassar wrote is correct, I believe that Dr Abela will be asking for trouble unless he is ready to bow his head to Mintoff’s whims and fancies. Labour has already had more than enough of them. Such a move can only create problems rather than solve them. And this will result in division not unity. There were no “others, like him”. No one else voted with the PN Opposition to bring down the Labour government in 1998! Indeed, Mintoff continued playing his own game right up to the eve of the last election! As regards Mintoff, sorry George, no deal!
