Malta obtained positive results with some good showing yesterday on the first day of the second Mediterranean Friendship tournament between athletes from Malta and Sicily.
This second edition is being held in Malta. The Festival includes various disciplines which do not form part of teh Games for teh European Small States of Europe, the Commonwealth Games and the Mediterranean Games.
In the Badminton Team event Malta, represented by Joanna Cassar, Catherine Dimech, Kenneth Vella and David Cole, beat CONI Sicilia 4-1.
In Beach Volley (men doubles) Aaron Stivala and Robert Balzan beat Sicilian opponents Marco Milazzo and Daniele Nicosia 2-0 (21-17 and 21-16). There was also a similar 2-0 win in the women doubles, by the Malta pair Alison Borg Hayman and Belinda Milton.
The Epee Fencing team beat Sicily 39-38 but Malta lost 36-9 in the Foil team.
Golfers Andy Borg and Nicholas Borg won against the Sicily team while Derek Conti and Joseph Mifsud, taking part in Table Football, recorded a 2-0 win against opponents Riccardo La Rosa and Emilio Richichi.
There were also wins for Malta in Snooker. Duncan Bezzina beat Dario Barone 4-0 (77-24; 87-14; 93-14; 74-16) and Mario Brincat is leading Fiorenzo Brafa Misicoro 2-0 in a match to be continued today.
The second and final day of these Friendship Games will be held today where more Maltese athletes will be taking part in Dancesport, Karate, Mountain Bike, Pool, Snooker, Triathlon and Weightlifting.
A minimum of two female and two male athletes from both the Maltese and Sicilian sides will be taking part.
