Skorba Land

Malta Independent Sunday, 4 May 2008, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

From Ms C. Zerafa

In the article titled “One of the most important archaeological sites in Malta – and most of it still in private hands”, reference is made to the Lands Department (TMIS, 27 April).

In his article Mr Grima speaks about Skorba as one of the most important archaeological sites in the Maltese Islands. However he points out that the most important part of Skorba lies outside the wire-netting fence and is in private hands.

The journalist claims that one of the farmers who owns the land actually wants to give the land to the government.

The Government Property Division is not aware that the landowner is willing to give the land in question to the government for free. Until now, no such offer has been made.

Apart from this, funds for the expropriation of the land in question had been requested from Heritage Malta but these have not yet been forwarded. Once funds are made available, the Government Property Division would proceed with expropriation under the Land Acquisition Ordinance.
