More positive results were obtained yesterday on the second and final day of the Mediterranean Friendship tournament between Malta and Sicily.

The tournament is in its second edition after the first was held last November in Palermo. This one was organised by the Maltese Olympic Committee.

Several positive results had also been obtained on the opening day (on Friday).

Yesterday, in the second matches in beach volley doubles, Malta again finished on top with the men winning 2-0 (21-12, 21-18) and the women 2-1 (21-11, 18-21, 15-7).

On the second day of the golf competition, Sicily finished one up yesterday after Malta had ended the first day two up.

The following were the results in the Karate competition:

Chris Rotin beat William Torre 3-2; Caroline Bugeja lost 5-0 to Jessica Bisignano in Kata, Stephen Bugeja beat Ignazio Bono 6-1; Joseph Galea lost to Marco Lentini 3-5, Chris Rotin went down narrowly to Alfio Fichera 5-6 while Carolina Bugeja also lost to Jessica Bisignano in Kumite (0-1).

In the Mountain Bike competition, Mirko Farnisi of Sicily was first in a time of 1 hour 18.46 mins. Second was team-mate Francesco Aulino while Malta’s Etienne Bonello was third in a time of 1:23.07.

In the women’s event, Roselisa Palma (1:04.11) and Claudia Andolina (1:06.09) of Sicily were too good for Malta’s Stephania Magri who finished way back in third place in 1:18.58.

Pool and snooker produced some very positive results.

In pool, Clayton Attard beat Salvatore Tomaselli 6-0, Clint Azzopardi beat Paolo Picataggi 6-1, Attard then beat Picataggi 6-2 and Azzopardi beat Tomaselli 6-1.

In the snooker event, the Maltese also won their matches hands down against their inexperienced opponents.

Duncan Bezzina and Mario Brincat both overcame Fiorenzo Rafa Misicoro and Dario Barone 4-0 to register two victories each.

In the men’s triathlon, it was Sicily’s Mario Cumbo who triumphed in 2hrs 1.53 mins. Second was another Sicilian, Salvatore Campagna, while third was Malta’s Brian Magri who clocked 2: 06.42.

The women’s event was more interesting with Donatelle Callus of Malta winning in a time of 2 hrs 27.22 minutes, ahead of Sicily’s Maria Grazia Prestigiacomo who clocked 2:29.17. Third was Danika Spiteri in a time of 2hrs 34.06.

The weightlifting and Dancesport competitions were still in progress late yesterday evening.

The Games’ Closing Ceremony was held at the Topaz Hotel in Bugibba.
