Nigerian striker Anthony Ewurun helped his side Senglea complete a double over relegation threatened Mellieha, who now are in grave danger of immediately being relegated to Division Two.
Richard Mercieca’s side had beaten Mellieha 4-0 in the first round and yesterday, without setting any houses on fire the Cottonera side never looked in danger of forfeiting any points.
In fact Senglea immediately took the lead when after only 100 seconds of play, Leeroy Bonnet, who lately had won the his place in the first 11 floated a tentalising ball into the Mellieha area, and the usual Anthony Ewurun was in the right position to head home past the stranded Simon Gauci.
The Nigerian striker could have made it 2-0 four minutes later, but this time his header from a difficult angle just missed the target after Daniel Cosaitis had made the early running.
Sandro Costa Brasilino tried his luck in the eight minute from just outside the area this after Calabretta had controlled the ball well following a Martin Camilleri free-kick.
This perhaps was Mellieha’s best patch and in the 15th minute George Attard produced a magnificent save on William Borg’s flick after a Costa Brasilino swerving cross. In the 28th minute Mellieha protested harshly for a penalty when Calabretta made contact with Erin Azzopardi, with referee Paul Caruana booking the young Mellieha striker for simulation.
In the 31st minute Daniel Cosaitis header following a Mark Tanti cross was well saved by Mellieha keeper Simon Gauci. Two minutes later some good work by Calabretta in the Senglea area was finished off by Ibrahim Tarek whose drive from outside the area was saved by George Attard. Two minutes before the break an Ibrahim Tarek free-kick hit the crossbar with the ball finishing over.
Mellieha immediately came out attacking in the second half but it was Senglea who could have made it 2-0 when on 48 minutes Simon Gauci and his defence failed to combine together, the ball fell to Anthony Ewurun who lobbed the ball over the crossbar.
But the Nigerian striker made amends on 50 minutes when Joseph Farrugia floated a ball in the Melieha area, and Ewurun was quick in the area to shoot home. In the 69th minute a fierce drive by Sandro Costa Brasilino was well saved by the Senglea custodian.
Two minutes later Mark Tanti failed to conclude from close-range when he drove the ball against the goalkeeper and from the rebound Brady Zerafa drove the ball over the crossbar.
On 77 minutes Leeroy Bonnet scored a wonderful goal when he controlled well a Daniel Cosaitis long ball, the Senglea midfielder lobbing the ball over Simon Gauci, with the ball hitting the crossbar before hitting the net.
Mellieha reduced the arrears a minute before the end when Ibrahim Tarek scored from close range following a Sandro Costa Brasilino cross.
