Be Part of Earthrace biofuel powerboat round-the-world record attempt

Malta Independent Wednesday, 7 May 2008, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

Earthrace, the world’s fastest powerboat utilising solely biofuel, started a round-the-world attempt from Sagunto, Spain on 27 April, in an attempt to break the round-the-world speed record while promoting the use of sustainable fuels. The opportunity of a lifetime is being offered to individuals to become part of this event.

The impressive 78-foot wave-piercing trimaran runs exclusively on biodiesel and has a net zero carbon footprint, making it one of the world’s most environment-friendly powerboats. This new attempt will see Earthrace cross the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian oceans in the attempt to circumnavigate the Earth at a maximum speed of 40 knots.

People will be able to join this record-setting adventure by purchasing one or more of the legs. Individuals interested should be in good health, and able to follow instructions. In addition to the adventure of a lifetime they will also be able to pilot Earthrace during the leg, be an active, working member of the crew, participate in a world record-setting event, be on the forefront of environmental change and have bragging rights for a lifetime.

The crew’s progress can be followed via the website www.earthrace.net where regular blogs are posted by the captain and crew.

The site also features photos and video diaries. At present Earthrace is in Puerto Rico. The distance travelled so far is around 8,000km.

EORC, local producers of biodiesel, have taken a keen interest and have been following the project closely. Pippo Psaila, EORC commercial manager said, “This is such an original and fantastic way to promote biodiesel on an international level. It deserves our admiration and cooperation especially in these days of international concern on fuel consumption.”

Earthrace is run as a non-profit-making venture with a boat, ground and London-base crew made up of international volunteers with the aim of promoting biofuel. It is the highest-profile powerboat in the world, as well as one of the most environment-friendly. It is a showcase of environment-friendly technologies such as low-emissions engines, non-toxic anti-foul and efficient hull design. It is also one of the best-looking boats ever imagined.
