Lija Ath-Melita 3-2

After just seven minutes Lija were close as a shot by Andre Scicluna which just missed the target.

Melita responded through Luke Micallef whose shot finished just wide and in the 25th minute an attempt by Julian Galea was cleared by Lija’s defender Andre Scicluna with Lija’s goalkeeper Josuel Caruana out of his goal.

On 31 minutes Lija’s striker Beppe Antignolo shot just wide and seconds later the Lija keeper brought off a fine save to deny Mark Hyzler. In the 36th minute Lija were denied by Sapiano off an angled shot by Beppe Antignolo but they managed to open the score in the 44th minute through Andre Scicluna.

Melita’s immediate reaction produced an equaliser a minute later with Jonathan Mifsud’s cross being headed in by Luke Micallef. Two minutes into added time the Melita custodian Sapiano saved a penalty taken by Beppe Antignolo. The penalty was given for a foul by David Azzopardion Andre Cachia.

Lija were the better team during the second-half with Lydon Cilia giving them a 2-1 lead after 56 minutes but five minutes later Matthew Borg II obtained the Amateurs’ equalising goal folloowing good work by Luke Micallef.

At the other end Lija went close through Beppe Antignolo, Hubert Friggieri and Alan Ellul but seven minutes from time Hubert Friggieri scored the winning goal for Lija. In the closing stages Daniel Mizzi wasted a clear opportunity for Lija with Luke Micallef doing the same for the Amateurs.

St.Venera-Mgarr 3-4

Mgarr played the netter football during the first-half with Chris Abela going close early on as a point-blank shot by Chris Abela was blocked by Brian Zammit. However it was the Lightnings who broke the deadlock on seven minutes as a good move by Mark Grech was finished off by Noel Portelli with a strong low shot.

Mgarr’s reaction produced a deserved equaliser in the 21st minute through Chris Abela and later on the post stopped a shot by Matthew Muscat.

In the 29th minute Mgarr took the lead with Chris Abela beating Zammit with a low shot and then Eric Sciberras hit just over the bar from a well-taken free-kick.

Mgarr suffered a blow on 54 minutes with James Borg being sent off for a second caution and eight minutes later St.Venera made it two-all through Ian Falzon.

Mgarr’s reply produced their third goal in the 72nd minute through an own-goal by the Lightnings’s central defender Yau Mun Law but St.enera were once again back on level terms at 3-3 through Ian Falzon’s second goal following a mistake by the Mgarr custodian.

Seconds from time Matthew Borg scored a dramatic winning goal for Mgarr United who now await Zurrieq’s final match against Sirens to know whether they will avoid the drop to 3rd Division football next season.
