Brazilian striker Marcelo Pereira is thought to be a main target for the top Premier clubs, including champions Valletta.

The Mqabba striker was once again very impressive as he scored another two goals in the 2-2 draw against Msida St Joseph on Thursday evening, leading the top clubs to go on the alert in the chase for his services.

So far he has scored 12 of his side’s 23 League goals - a very impressive record indeed. The player is certainly one of the most talented foreigners in local football.

One source told The Malta Independent that Valletta and Birkirkara have already shown some interest, but this could not be officially confirmed.

Earlier this week, Valletta FC president Victor Sciriha told this newspaper that in strengthening the side for next season, he would need three good foreigners, who should have a level above that of the local players.

Valletta have German midfielder Heiner Backhaus, Argentine striker Sebastian Monesterolo and Nigerian winger Frank Temile in their squad this season and they have all been influential in one way or another in helping Valletta to their title win.

On the other hand, Birkirkara seem to be prepared to confirm Amed Davy Sylla after scoring no less than eight goals in the 12 matches he has played for the club since January.

That leaves the possibility of Pereira joining either Marsaxlokk or Sliema, if the latter two clubs (or one of them) earns a berth in the UEFA Cup, of course.
