Mellieha were yesterday soundly beaten by promotion aspirants Mosta, to make a quick return to second division football after only one season in this division. Mellieha faced severe problems in attack throughout the season and yesterday’s relegation came as no surprise.

On the other hand Mosta continued with their run towards a place in the Premier League, even if they have to wait for Qormi and Tarxien’s results, and could also play a decider to make it to the Premier.

Mosta were yesterday completely superior and could have even won by a bigger margin. Molzahn’s boys gave a very good display but Ryan Deguara and Kalenga were a span above the rest.

Mosta dominated their opponents from the initial whistle, and took the lead on ten minutes when Ndayi Kalenga beat a couple of defenders before beating Gauci with a fierce low drive from the edge of the area.

Mellieha went close to the equalizer six minutes later when a Robert Muscat header from close range slammed against the crossbar with the Mosta goalkeeper completely beaten. On the other end Mosta had a good break with Ryan Deguara passing towards Kalenga whose shot was brilliantly tipped into a corner by the Mellieha goalkeeper.

From the resultant corner taken by Camenzuli, Massimo Grima’s header hit the base of the upright.

On 39 minutes Massimo Grima shot slightly wide from an ideal position. Just before the break Mosta doubled the score when Ryan Deguara’s run on the right flank was finished with a perfect cross towards Carlos Camenzuli who shot low into the net.

Mellieha made two changes at the start of the second half introducing Ibrahim Tarek and goalkeeper James Abela. But Mosta continued to pile the pressure with Carlos Camenzuli missing a sitter in front of goal. On the hour Mosta scored their third goal with a well executed move, with Massimo Grima’s shot partially saved by Abela and from the rebound Kalenga made no mistake.

The game was now won and lost with Mosta continuing to attack and even create several scoring chances but failed to add to their tally.
