Anthony Eviparker scored four goals in the space of ten minutes early in the second half to give Vittoriosa an astonishing win over their rivals St. George’s in the Cottonera derby. He also finished as top scorer of the First Division League with fifteen goals.
Vittoriosa took a quick lead when after only 25 seconds Charles Cachia headed in from close range a good cross by Keith Darmanin. St George’s made an immediate reaction as they pushed Vittoriosa in their own penalty area.
On fifteen minutes St George’s drew level when Anthony Bonello headed home a good Mead Mifsud cross from the left. The Saints continued to pile the pressure and went close on 22 minutes when an Anizoba drive was well saved by Cassar and from the resultant corner Vince Camilleri’s shot went slightly over the bar.
On 32 minutes St. George’s took the lead when Anizoba was pushed off the ball by Cedric Sciberras and from the resultant penalty veteran Jesmond Delia fired in the top corner of the net.
Ten minutes later Vittoriosa Stars were back on level terms when St George’s goalkeeper Gatt failed to hold a Larry Lagana freekick and Silvan Privitelli was on hand to home the equaliser.
On the resumption St George’s took an immediate lead when Glenn Barry dribbled past a defender before blasting beautifully at the back of the net. But on 52 minutes Vittoriosa equalised again when Eviparker was tripped inside the area by Vince Camilleri and the same Eviparker shot home from the penalty spot.
Four minutes later Vittoriosa were in front when Eviparker finished off a melee in front of goal. On the hour Lagana was floored by goalkeeper Gatt, with referee Barbara opting for the penalty and sending off goalkeeper Gatt. From the penalty spot Eviparker scored his hat trick after Mercieca had saved his first shot. Three minutes later Eviparker made it six for the stars when he fired in the top corner of the net a Darmanin cross.
Ten minutes from time Eviparker was denied by the crossbar and from the rebound Cachia again hit the crossbar. On 90 minutes Vittoriosa completed the triumph by scoring the seventh goal direct from a freekick taken by Johann Spiteri.
