This match was abandoned in the 57th minute of the second half when Zebbug Rangers fans contested the ref’s decision to send off Lawrence Zammit, thus leaving Rangers in nine men. During the incidents, assistant referee Duncan Sultana was hit at the back of his head. The match was abandoned and the police had to intervene amid further protests and trouble by the Rangers’ supporters.
The Gozitans were close early on through Chris Camilleri but it was the Rangers who broke the deadlock through a penalty given for a foul by Josef Buttigieg on Errol Cachia and converted by their captain Gordon Mallia.
At the other end the Gozitans wasted an easy opportunity through Mark Camilleri and later on the Zebbug keeper brought off difficult saves to foil Joseph Cefai and Mark Camilleri.
On 41 minutes the Gozitans drew level through Anthony Portelli and four minutes later they even took the lead as a through-pass by Chris Camilleri was finished off by Charles Hili.
A minute after the restart the Gozitans had increased their lead through a penalty given for a foul on Anthony Portelli and scored by the same player. There were protests by the Rangers’ players with Angelo Borg being sent off.
