The much-awaited National Championships have come and gone. These resulted in a big success for Birkirkara Badminton Club players winning five out of six titles.

Stefan Salomone retained his Men’s Singles title defeating Kenneth Vella of Paola W.

Partnered by his twin brother Robert they also retained the Men’s Doubles title by beating Paola W. duo Kenneth Vella and David Cole, thus winning their fifth Men’s Doubles title.

Mixed pairs Stefan Salomone and Fiorella M. Farrugia and Robert Salomone and Maria Borg made it an all-Birkirkara final when they defeated Paola W. pairs and last year’s finalists David Cole and Joanne Cassar and Kenneth Vella and Catherine Dimech respectively. Stefan and Fiorella emerged winners in the end. By winning the Men’s Singles, Men’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles, Stefan clinched his second Triple Crown of his career. From her end, this was Fiorella’s first National title ever.

Maria Borg also won her first National title after ousting last year’s winner in the semis, and then defeateing veteran Catherine Dimech of Paola W. in the final of the Ladies’ Singles. The only final lost by Birkirkara was the Ladies’ Doubles where Paola W. pair Joanne Cassar and Catherine Dimech beat Maria Borg and Fiorella M. Farrugia.

Brian Zammit, also of Birkirkara, won the Men’s Singles Preliminary title after beating Tony Xuereb of Paola W. in the final.

The results achieved in these National Championships confirm the good work done by the Birkirkara BC players led by club coach Martin Farrugia.
