Leo Brincat (TMID, 20 May) suggests that I suffer from political amnesia. Maybe he can help me remember whether in 1992 Karmenu Mifsud Bonnici had remained both as acting party leader and acting Opposition Leader until the new leader was elected, or resigned from leader but kept acting as Opposition Leader as is now happening.
The “as far as is known” preamble in the Office of the President reply on the constitutionality of the present arrangement makes the situation far from crystal clear. Such important matters should not be subject to “as far as is known” arrangements.
If until the election of their new leader, the Labour parliamentary group would prefer Dr Sant to continue as their Leader in the House rather than the acting party leader then they should state so officially.
But then this could be against the party’s own statute.
