Empty Dwellings and sustainable development

Malta Independent Saturday, 31 May 2008, 00:00 Last update: about 14 years ago

We note that the Housing Authority spokesperson informed your readers (TMID, 28 May) that application PA1484/08 to construct a further 34 units of mainly three-bedroom properties in Birbuba – Gharb, without the infrastructure to support it, was withdrawn by the authority on 14 May. This is very positive. It would however have been much better had the Housing Authority not submitted the application in the first place! The Housing Authority should urgently embark on an exercise intended at utilising vacant properties, since one in every three dwellings in Gozo is empty all year round.

Thereby the authority would be fulfilling its social role in full respect of our environment.

It will then be part of the solution and not any more part of the problem.
