E58 tax on cars

Malta Independent Sunday, 1 June 2008, 00:00 Last update: about 14 years ago

From Ms J. Refalo

There is talk in the media of a proposed €58 (Lm25) tax on cars to reduce the problem of parking.

It’s obvious that parking problems = too many cars + too little parking spaces.

So how does a proposed tax solve this problem? To solve it one needs to either reduce the number of cars or increase parking spaces.

If the authorities had listened to Rev. Dr Joe Vella Gauci’s (ex-archpriest of Gozo cathedral) proposed parking plan that would have eased the traffic problems, if multi-storey parking structures were set up that would ease the problem…

But a new tax? How can it help the traffic situation? Or perhaps the real aim behind the plan is to fill empty coffers?
