Volleyball: Men’s European Championship Qualifying round in Malta

Malta Independent Tuesday, 3 June 2008, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

The Malta Volleyball Association will once again be organising a qualification round for the European Championships at the Cottonera Sports Complex.

This time, the men’s national team will be competing against the national teams of Cyprus, Scotland and Iceland.

The national squad has been training hard over the past months under the charge of coach Jovan Vukalovic, in preparation for this tournament.

The morale among the men is high with several players reaching optimum performances after the week-long training camp held in April in Salerno, where the national team played a number of friendly games against Italian Serie B and Serie C teams.

Results obtained were very encouraging. The team will be further strengthened with the inclusion of Peter Testa who plays his volleyball in Canada. One must also note the return to the national squad of players like Paul Vella with the likes of Jonathan Chectuti and Robert Balzan included in the starting line up.

Without doubt, the strongest opposition that Malta will face will be against Cyprus, a match that will be played on Saturday afternoon. The Malta Volleyball Association is encouraging the public to visit the Cottonera Sports Complex to support the national squad. The full schedule of games is as follows:

Friday 6 June: 4.30pm Scotland-Cyprus; 7pm Iceland-Malta

Saturday 7 June: 4.30pm, Cyprus-Malta; Iceland-Scotland

Sunday 8 June: 3.30pm, Cyprus-Iceland; 6pm Malta-Scotland

International referees from Cyprus, Scotland, Iceland, Switzerland will be controlling the matches together with Malta’s own international referee Antonello Calleja.
