The 2008-2009 football season in Malta will commence on 7 July with the first match in connection with the Euro Challenge Cup, but the Premier League will start on 23 August.

The Euro Challenge Cup is a tournament in which the teams taking part in the Champions League and UEFA Cup qualifying rounds, take part. This year, these will be Valletta, Birkirkara and Marsaxlokk.

This tournament will be followed by the match for the Super Cup on 8 August. That will be between champions Valletta and Trophy winners Birkirkara.

The league will again be played over the same format as the past season, that is, a first phase consisting of two rounds where all the clubs play each other twice. This will be followed by a second phase which consists of the usual Championship Pool and the Relegation Pool.
