Malta Independent Thursday, 5 June 2008, 00:00 Last update: about 14 years ago

Sports journalists, members of the press, guests from trade as well as 28 lucky consumers had the exclusive opportunity to meet Michael Mifsud, Malta’s international football champion, on behalf of Gillette Champions, at the stylish TemptAsian Restaurant at The Palace, Sliema.

The Malta and Coventry City striker accepted to be the special guest on this occasion, adding that he was honoured to have been included among such prominent faces for the launch of this campaign in Malta.

Golfer Tiger Woods, tennis star Roger Federer and French footballer Thierry Henry have endorsed Gillette’s international campaign – Gillette Champions, and have lent their faces to the Brand’s message – that of “Being the best in your field”.

In Thierry Henry’s own words: “As an athlete who depends on my team mates every week, I recognise the importance of working together toward a common goal. Being a champion is much more than holding a trophy or receiving a medal – a champion stands up for what is right and encourages others to do the same. I am part of the Gillette Champions programme because I want to encourage others to be the best they can, not only during the game, but also in life.”

Gillette also included Malta’s local champion Michael Mifsud as he must also be considered as the Best in the Field. Michael warmed the hearts of all those present at the event, and his cordiality and accessibility truly made this event a special one for all. “I am happy to be endorsing this event,” said Michael. “With my super busy schedule, I can only afford the best in everything I do, and for my personal grooming I use Gillette Fusion.”

Maltese consumers were given the chance to participate in Gillette’s launch by competing in a Gillette Fusion Goal Wall competition held over the last two weekends at various locations in Malta. Hundreds of young and not so young men took turns at scoring and gaining points in the colourful and upbeat Goal Wall game, and 28 finalists took part in the Grand Finale at Gillette’s exclusive event. The winner, Jesmond Farrugia, won a trip for two, accommodation and match tickets to watch Michael Mifsud in action next season.

Victor Galea on behalf of V.J. Salomone Marketing Ltd, distributors of Gillette in Malta, explained the philosophy behind the concept of the Gillette Champions global campaign and its link with Malta. He launched the concept with a commercial featuring the three international Gillette champions. He also announced Gillette’s “Spot the Winning Shot” competition which will give winners the chance to compete alongside other European countries for a grand prize – that of meeting Thierry Henry in person. The competition will be launched very soon in stores and pharmacies around Malta and Gozo.

Amaury Marchandise, Proctor & Gamble Market Development Manager for Libya, Malta and Tunisia, said: “The Gillette name is synonymous with being the best. These three athletes have proven they have what it takes to be a champion on the course, the court or the pitch. They were chosen not only for their outstanding sporting performances, but also for their performance off the field, for their social responsibility and as icons of true sporting values. That is what the Gillette Champions is all about. Millions of men, women and children around the world look to these athletes, who raise their level of play and bring the game to a new level. They set the standard in sports and style. Their achievement and lifestyle is very inspiring to all of us!”
