The General Workers’ Union and the Union Haddiema Maghqudin will never get down to negotiate setting up a trades union council.

In your leader (TMID, 2 June) you make this quite clear although you never say it. And I totally agree with you. The two sides are on such different wave lengths that they will never come to terms on such a delicate subject.

For one thing, both would want the presidency, and not even a rotating two-year term would appease them. Secondly, they would lose their individual power and neither of them would want this to happen.

Yes, there is always talk of forming a trades union council. But the unions are too busy trying to achieve more power to realise this.

All unions say that their main interest is the worker. If that were so, they would form a trades union council.
