In your editorial Silent transformation (TMID, 4 June), you wrote that the Nationalist Party is undergoing a silent change in comparison to what has taken place in the Malta Labour Party.

I beg to differ.

There is a difference between a party that is changing a leader and one that is changing a few officials in the administration.

One remembers that when Dr Eddie Fenech Adami resigned four years ago, the PN did go through some internal strife that the MLP is going through right now. The internal struggles for power existed within the PN too when Lawrence Gonzi and John Dalli were vying for the leadership.

It was to be expected that the MLP goes through some difficulty after their defeat at the last election. What I did not agree with was the length of time it took the party to elect its new leader. Three months were a bit too long.

But otherwise it was a process that the party needed to go through. And the fact that five candidates chose to put their name forward as a possible leader shows that the party had so much to choose from.

I hope that Dr Joseph Muscat as the new leader will unite the party as it bids to win the next election.
