Malta Independent Tuesday, 10 June 2008, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

GymStars celebrates its fifth anniversary this year with success. The club opened its doors for the first time in 2003, having started with only 40 members it was then a very small club. But today, it is one of the largest clubs in Malta with approx 400 members. It has developed a programme for kids as young as one year and as old as 16 and over.

The club provides members with three different programmes.

Programme 1: Non Competitive, that is PE gymnastics and educational gymnastics

Programme 2: Developing programme

Programme 3: Competitive gymnastics

Programme 1is earmarked to develo youngsters from as young as three years. This programme provides learning through play and fun. Badges and certificates are earned through play and musical warm ups.

Equipment is also chosen carefully for young children of that age, and all this is purposely built as educational for small children, brightly coloured that is also attractive to children.

At GymStars you do not need to be a competitive gymnast to be member. Children can just enroll to have Fun. An important factor is that the club licensed for educational Gymnastics where the environment and safety comes first. Members over six years and over learn gymnastics in a non-competitive environment. At this age gymnastics is taught through P.E Gymnastics with lots of fun teaching. Children at this age can still earn badges and certificates through the programme and assessments for progress are given to parents.

The other two programmes are only done on the coaches’ recommendations.

There is a class that is being held twice a week for the parent and the child together. This class helps both the parent and child to bond with each other by having lots of fun. From next year this class will have an added bonus, participants will get a certificate and Badge.

The club has also organised The Kids Go active Summer club. This programme is based for children between three years to 16yrs with the opportunity of taking part in an eight-week programme with three different sports for all. Children can be left at the club for either three or four.

The programme will consist of football, mini basket, swimming, pool games, pottery making, gymnastics, trampolining, sailing, canoeing, horse riding, and much more. We believe that summer is for play and having fun and not to remain in a classroom. Kids Go Active is created for those kids who really want to have fun.

GymStars also provides classes in other schools such as Stella Maris in Balzan, St Edwards College and St Joan Antide. The clubs’s coaches have been trained and developed through the British Gymnastics.

Gymstars very recently created Team Gym, which is a Team sport and very new on the island. It is the only club that has this gymnastics programmme for fun and team work for both Boys and Girls with ages from 10 and over.

The Club is also proud that it holds classes in gymnastics with the collaboration of Special Olympics for athletes with Intellectual disability.

For this purpose training is given by two specialised coaches under the supervision of Special Olympics. GymStars’ motto is the safety of children and to give opportunities for the ones who just want to have a healthy life and fun for the developing and the competitive Gymnastics.

Gymstars is the only full time club in Malta with an administration that works for the benefit of children. For further information one may phone on 21660903/99660903
