The government is planning a reform of the local councils, and I think that this is long overdue.

Unfortunately, some local councils have been dominated by the same people for many years, and little seems to be done. The thing is, the residents still continue to vote for the same people because few others show an interest.

In your editorial (TMID, 21 May), you suggest that mayors should not be allowed to stay on for more than two terms and that they should remain as councillors even though they obtain the highest number of votes.

I would go a step further and suggest that all councillors can only be elected for a maximum of three terms, and that then they should move on. This will allow for a better representation of the residents’ wishes, and open the way for other people who know they can be of service but refrain from doing so because of the domination I mentioned earlier.

It is only in this way that local councils can work better.
