Malta Labour Party delegates have ignored the wishes of the people, and elected Dr Joseph Muscat as their leader is spite of being told by the Maltese electorate, through the many surveys that were carried out, that Dr George Abela would have been a better choice.

Just as much as they made the mistake of re-electing Alfred Sant as their leader five years ago soon after their defeat in the election of that year, I believe that they will live to regret the choice they made last Friday.

Dr Muscat is too much of a clone of Dr Sant. Added to this, he has no political experience and I am sure that he will be finding it hard to please all the factions that exist within his own party.

It would have been better if Dr Abela was elected leader with Dr Muscat as his deputy. Labour would have stood a better chance of winning the next election and Dr Muscat would have gained all the necessary experience to take over from Dr Abela in a few years’ time.

But, alas, Labour have made the same mistake.
